1. Politički aspekti obrazovanja;
2. Pionirska organizacija i ideologizacija djetinjstva;
3. Omladinske radne akcije;
4. Udarništvo;
5. Radnici i samoupravljanje: slučaj brodogradilišta Uljanik;
6. Radnička kulturna praksa u socijalizmu: slučaj istarske periodike;
7. Jezik tiskanih medija: slučaj istarske periodike;
8. Uloga novinarstva i medija u oblikovanju novoga čovjeka;
9. Glazbena periodika u formativnom razdoblju socijalizma;
10. Popularna kultura: zabavna glazba, televizija i moda;
11. Potrošačka kultura i vijeća potrošača u sustavu socijalističkog samoupravljanja;
12. Odnos između politike i sporta.

Rezultati

Making of a “new man” – and woman in the present-day terms – is a concept that has constantly been re-examined and discussed in many political and geographical contexts throughout the twentieth century. The focus of this research project highlights a specific historical situation: the endeavours of Yugoslav authorities in making of a new socialist citizen after the World War II, especially in Croatia as one of the republics forming the Yugoslav Federation. The socialist citizen was first placed in a strongly Soviet-oriented society, but the situation very soon shifted towards a specific kind of Yugoslav self-management and market socialism. In the period between the introduction of self-management and market socialism, the Program of the League of Communists of Yugoslavia, inspired by the Marxist-Leninist theory, in 1958 pointed out that the socialist citizen was expected to be a free and creative person, a new man with the power and ability to change the world. According to the Program, socialism was there to secure the well-being – all the needs of the socialist man as a producer-consumer, as an industrious and healthy individual in order to enable his or her personal happiness – as well as to stimulate the creative potential of the new society. Not only the communists or the authorities at all levels had a role in the shaping of a new society, but also socialist mass organizations, trade unions and every single socialist man and woman, child and teenager. However, the following thirty years witnessed different relations between this theory and everyday practice. The long period of four and a half decades (1945-1990) therefore calls for special attention due to changes of political system over time: from the formative period of the socialist man to the partial deconstruction of the concept.

In many ways Croatia represents an excellent case-study for the research of the Yugoslav society, but in this project it will always be included in the Yugoslav framework and – whenever necessary – in a wider historical context and related comparatively to other socialist societies ruled by communist parties. In some cases the research will reach the level of specific case-studies within Croatia, while in others the focus will be placed on a general overview with nation-wide importance, reflections and repercussions.

The socialist citizen will be closely analyzed in a variety of appearances: from childhood to retirement, in work and leisure or sport, as a creator and a recipient of culture, from the theoretical ideals of high politics to the successful or problematic practices. This means that a wide range of issues will be analyzed and interpreted, and the whole time-span of socialism and much of a socialist citizen’s life course covered. The concept of the “socialist man” will include a variety of groups: children as pupils and pioneers; youth as participants of labour actions; workers as shock-workers, but also as self-managers, recipients and creators of cultural practices; workers in the triangle formed by mining, shipbuilding and tourism, but also the so called cultural, pedagogical and sport workers; working-class intellectual life, as well as their pastimes; socialist citizens as participants in popular culture, leisure and consumer culture; socialist citizens enjoying their standard of living, but sometimes also troubled by the economic situation; socialist citizens united in a multi-ethnic federation and obliged to obey the idea of brotherhood and unity, but also ready to discuss their political and national rights, whether in the education system, world of labour, media, scholar production or sport system.

In other words, the research team will approach twelve specific topics within the common research subject:

1. Political aspects of education;
2. The pioneer organization and the ideologization of childhood;
3. Youth labour actions;
4. Implementation of shock-work;
5. Workers and self-management: case-study of the shipyard Uljanik;
6. Workers’ cultural practices in socialism: case-study of Istrian periodicals;
7. Language of the printed media: case-study of Istrian periodicals;
8. Role of journalism and media in shaping the new man;
9. Musical journalism in the formative socialist period;
10. Popular culture: popular music, television and fashion;
11. Consumer culture and consumer councils in the system of socialist self-management;
12. Relation between politics and sport.

Results
The course of the project is followed through the main work and financial plans, the individual half-year research plans and research reports for the respective half-year periods, summaries of the individual topics, reports on bibliography and sources, as well as the personal final reports.

There are several benefits that might arise from this project: Croatian humanities might benefit from the academic attention given to the under-researched subject; the  academic attention might help in a better understanding of the past and in adding stronger arguments in present public debates on the nature of socialist system; the team members who are university lecturers have the privilege to turn their research results into new courses and present them to the students; and, finally, the project might be a good basis for future cooperation among the team members, while doctoral students have a chance to complete their dissertation in an academically inspiring surrounding.

HRZZ supports the open access to academic publications, so the results will be available at the project's web-page. The Expected results include two monographs (2015), an edited volume (2017) and around twenty papers in academic journals (2014-2017). The work of the research team can be seen also at conferences.
