About the Centre

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Landscape Archaeology was established in 2015 as an organizational unit of the Faculty of Humanities of the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula.

Landscape Archaeology studies the mutual influence of society and nature, in which way was the landscape used to shape social structures, and how it influenced the society, i. e.  the human community in space.

The main objectives of the Centre are:

  • to promote the holistic interpretation of past landscape dynamics by applying an interdisciplinary approach
  • to understand and reconstruct the history of the territory with the analyses of a series of natural features and antrophogenic elements
  • to develop national and international cooperation among scientists of various disciplines connected to archaeology in the field of humanities, natural sciences and engineering

The main activities of the Centre are:

  • research focused on filling the gaps in the understanding of human-landscape interaction and human transformation of the environment
  • gathering and analysis of data on the spatial distribution of archaeological sites
  • elaboration and implementation of interdisciplinary scientific research projects, aiming to meet the main objectives of the Centre
  • elaboration of studies and research projects for the development of spatial and other plans, as guidance in the planning process (archaeological-conservation studies)
  • collaboration with institutions, centres, and individuals on joint projects and studies
  • organization of workshops, seminars and scientific conferences
  • publication of monographs and scientific papers with the results of the Centre's activities
